Aston Martin Racing Unveils Winning Le Mans Gulf Livery

Le Mans, 18 June 2013 - Aston Martin Racing and Gulf have unveiled the winner of their livery design competition. The design, inspired by the change in atmosphere as day gives way to night during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, was created by Jonathan Wesley from Kettering in the UK and will adorn the #97 Vantage GTE throughout race week. Darren Turner (GB), Stefan Mücke (D) and Peter Dumbreck (GB), drivers of the #97 Vantage GTE, selected Jonathan’s design from the hundreds of entries received. He will now attend the race weekend as a VIP guest of Gulf to see his winning design compete in the 90th 24 Hours of Le Mans. "I have been excited ever since I got the news that my design had been chosen,” comments Jonathan. “I loved the chance of being able to design a Gulf Aston Martin, but it's already such a classic livery that I was wondering what I could do. “I was just sketching a few thoughts out and I liked the idea of the car being a different colour on both sides. I thought about the Gulf corporate colours – dark blue, light blue, orange and white – and I came up with the idea of ‘daylight to dusk’, which to me is the most exciting part of the race. “So it moves from the white with the broad orange stripe dividing things to the dark blue of the night. The orange and blue lines represent the streaks that you often see in photos of the cars at night and the whole design sort of summed up the essence of Le Mans to me." Gulf, which has partnered Aston Martin Racing for five years and has signed a further three-year deal, ran the livery competition to allow fans to participate in the team’s most ambitious Le Mans campaign, marking the centenary year of Aston Martin. Sam Cork, Global Brand Manager at Gulf explained: “Gulf has been responsible for some extremely iconic motorsport liveries and we wanted to give fans the opportunity to play their part. To design the livery for a Gulf Aston Martin, racing at Le Mans in the brand’s centenary year, is really something quite special.   “This livery will enter Gulf and Aston Martin Racing’s history books and Jonathan should be extremely proud to be the winner, as we had hundreds of entries from all over the world. The design is excellent. It is everything we hoped for. We can’t wait to see it take to the track for the most exciting endurance race of the year.” The #97 car is one of five Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTEs competing in the 24-hour race, but the only one to carry the competition-winning design. The car will first be seen on the Circuit de la Sarthe at the first free practice session on Wednesday 19 June at 16:00 hrs.

Race Season is Back

Team Cadillac hit the Streets of St Petersburg this weekend for rounds 1 and 2 of the Pirelli World Challenge race season on a quest to defend our 2012 Championship. We faced some stiff competition from new entries from Porsche and Audi and the always fast team from Volvo. The first race saw Team Cadillac start in the 5th and 6th spots and when the checkered flag waived Johnny O'Connell (#3) moved up to 4th and Andy Pilgrim (#8) moved to the 5th spot. After the race it was determined that the Porsche failed the tech inspection with a front splitter that didn't conform to series rules and it was disqualified moving Team Cadillac Driver's to 3rd and 4th positions and our first podium of the year. Race 2 began with Johnny O'Connell starting in the 5th spot and teammate Andy Pilgrim in the 7th spot. The Volvos jumped out to an early lead closely followed by Audi (Sofronas) and Porsche (Dalziel). As the race progressed the Porsche of Dalziel sat in 3rd spot when he had an on track incident causing a flat tire and he dropped from contention. Then pole sitter and race leader Alex figge (Volvo) had brake and tire problems and dropped out of the running. The race finished with Audi in 1st followed by Volvo and Cadillac (O'Connell) providing Cadillac it's second podium of the 2013 season. Overall a solid start to the season against a very competitive field. Team Cadillac takes to the track next April 19-22 on the Streets of Long Beach. The race will be streamed live @ world-challengetv.com.

Aston Martin Vanquish: Most Beautiful Supercar of the Year

The Aston Martin Vanquish won the award for “The most beautiful Supercar of the Year” at The Festival Automobile International in Paris this week. The super GT has already been known for collecting numerous awards as the flagship of English sports cars. An expert team, including world-renowned architect Jean-Michael Wimotte and Honorary President Ari Vatanen chaired the voting panel to award the Grand Prize for “the most beautiful and interesting projects of the year focusing on art and automobile.” “The new Aston Martin Vanquish is an unmistakable visual interpretation of the brand’s ethos,” Marek Reichman, Design Director of Aston Martin said. “It is a triumph of both design and technical ability. As the new flagship of Aston Martin’s model range we are proud to win this prestigious design award, it makes a wonderful continued start to our birthday centenary year.” The majority vote was given to the Vanquish and it took first place even while competing against a tough competition. The limited edition Laliques Bacchantes trophy awarded to Aston Martin represents the second time the British brand has acquired this prestigious prize with the luxurious four door sports car Rapide winning in 2010 ( www.astonmartin.com). Introduced in June 2012, the Vanquish will be viewable at the Festival Automobile International 2013 exhibition.

The Dimmitt Family – Pinellas pioneers

The Dimmitt Family – Pinellas pioneers TBNWeekly.com, 10/23/12 By BRIAN GOFF DUNEDIN – In many places in Pinellas County are signs identifying Dimmitt family automobile dealerships. Look beyond the signs however and you will find a family whose history in Pinellas County is as rooted and embedded as any other. In fact the family, going back five generations, has been in the county almost as long as the county itself. It is difficult to tell the story of the Dimmitt family without including its involvement in the automobile industry. Almost from the moment Larry Dimmitt Sr. arrived in Clearwater in 1924, cars have been part of the family. Larry Sr. and his wife Hebe arrived in Clearwater from Port St. Joe, where he actually owned a section of railroad. It was common back then to freight supplies down the Atlantic Coast and then send the goods on to New Orleans by railroad. Larry owned part of that railroad. Before moving to Port St. Joe, Larry lived in Savannah, Ga., and had a Buick distributorship. It wasn’t long after he arrived in Clearwater he got back into the car business. He bought the local Ford Dealership and never looked back. Richard Dimmitt, 60, and his brother Larry III are the third generation of Dimmitts to continue what their grandfather began. “We and everyone else called him Potsie,” said Richard. “Back then Clearwater was small, maybe 5,000 people. There wasn’t even a bridge over to the barrier islands. He would stand on the bluff and look over and he thought he was looking at the next West Palm Beach.” Eventually Larry Sr. began buying land and at one point it was said that next to the county itself, he owned more land in Pinellas than anybody. Over the years “Potsie” continued to enlarge his automobile business. “He sold Rio, White, LaSalle and finally got Cadillac and Chevy in the mid-’30s,” said Richard. “He did that when there was nothing east of Clearwater except trees and dirt tracks. Dad tells me downtown Clearwater was two blocks long and two blocks wide.” Larry Jr., Richard’s father, already involved in the car business, had to go to war. He fought in World War II under General Patton. He met his wife-to-be Betty Jane Roth as he was recovering from a war wound in New York City. They moved back to Florida and went right back into the business. “My dad used to tell me stories of how he would go door to door trying to convince people to buy cars during the Depression,” said Richard. “Life was a lot slower then. People came for three and four weeks at a time to visit and as the area grew, he grew with it.” In the meantime Larry Sr. was turning his attention to charitable causes. “He built gyms for schools, additions to hospitals and helped churches,” said Richard. “Then he retired in the early ’70s.” Larry Sr. died at the age of 96. “Potsie was a strong guy,” said Richard of his grandfather. “At 84 he was still painting his own house. They had to get him down off the ladder and convince him to stop.” Eventually the Caddy and Chevy dealerships were split into two separate businesses. Richard, his older brother Larry III and their sister Eileen were involved in the businesses. Another brother, Ben, wasn’t interested and moved to New York City where he became a photographer. Their father, Larry Jr., died in 2011 at the age of 97. It is his name that graces the Dimmitt Community Center in his hometown of Belleair. Richard Dimmitt is semi-retired now. “I’m slowing down and spending most of my time on boards and helping charities,” he said. His brother Larry III and his sister Eileen are both retired. Now the mantle is being passed to yet another generation of Dimmitt’s. Larry III’s son Larry IV is running the Dimmitt Chevrolet franchise in Clearwater. Larry III’s daughters Mallory, Elizabeth and Genevieve are not involved in the business. Richard’s sons Richard Jr. and Peter are running the Dimmitt Cadillac franchises in Clearwater and Pinellas Park. None of Eileen’s children, Michael, Betty Jane, Andrew or Timothy are involved in the businesses, although Michael has two children Daniel and Abigail, the 5th generation of Dimmitt’s in Pinellas County and the great-great grandchildren of Larry Dimmitt Sr. It is too early to tell if one or both might follow the family tradition of selling cars. Richard Dimmitt says he and his family are proud to be counted among the pioneering families of Pinellas County, and for good reason. “Pinellas is a fabulous place to live,” he said. “There are still places where it is quiet, where you can glimpse at the way things used to be. You can still be connected to the big life, yet you can step away from the very intense type of activity. This area offers the perfect blend of life.” Check out this great article detailing the origins of the Dimmitt Automotive Group from the TBNweekly.com!

2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider Revealed!

McLaren Automotive is expanding its lineup with the addition of its second model, the new 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider, which is ready for order and starts delivery in November. The convertible supercar comes just one year after the launch of the hard-top MP4-12C and gets all the latest features introduced with the 2013 update. This means that peak output from its twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 is a healthy 616 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. McLaren calls the car’s roof system the ‘Retractable Hard Top’ and has designed it so that it can be operated at speeds of up to 19 mph. Raising or lowering the roof takes just 17 seconds and top speed remains an impressive 204 mph--just 3 mph shy of the hard-top’s peak. Thanks to the MP4-12C’s carbon fiber ‘MonoCell’ chassis, no additional strengthening was required for the MP4-12C Spider. The result is a sports car almost identical to its fixed roof equivalent in performance terms, and weighing only 88 pounds more with the addition of a convertible roof system. Overall weight with all fluids on board comes in at around 3,200 pounds. Behind the driver and passenger sits a rear windscreen which may also be electronically lowered and raised. With the roof lowered this acts as wind deflector, and with the roof raised the rear window can still be lowered, allowing the engine’s sweet exhaust note to roar into the cabin. With the roof raised there is around 1.8 cubic feet of storage behind the cabin. Bespoke luggage has been designed specifically to fit this space and is supplied as standard with the car. A rollover protection system is also fitted, with each of those tall buttresses containing a steel structure designed to absorb impact energy and protect occupants. As mentioned, the 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider is ready for order and should commence deliveries in November. In the mealtime, head over to the McLaren website and play around with the new configurator. [gallery link="file" ids="23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30" orderby="rand"]

LOS ANGELES, June 27, 2012 - Total Car Score (www.totalcarscore.com), the most comprehensive automotive ranking and comparison website, announced today the 10 Best American Cars for 2012. This year's top spot goes to the 2012 Cadillac CTS luxury sedan. As the nation prepares to mark Independence Day, Total Car Score's list of the 10 Best American Cars reflects the strength and quality of the domestic auto industry. The rankings represent nearly every category of car, including luxury sedans and SUVs as well as crossovers and large wagons. Karl Brauer, editor in chief and CEO of Total Car Score, and a veteran industry observer, commented on the rankings: "The Detroit Big 3 have quickly rebounded to produce some of the highest rated cars on the market, and America clearly hasn't lost its grip on the large SUV or high-performance sedan segments. All three manufacturers made the Top 10 list with at least one 'tuner' version of their mainstream sedans, confirming Detroit muscle is alive and well. "Kudos to Cadillac for earning the top spot with its CTS luxury sedan, the Top Scoring domestic model on the market. General Motors also captured six of the Top 10 spots with hits from Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and a total of three Cadillac models. Ford's Taurus SHO and Flex represent the Blue Oval's best, while two versions of Chrysler's venerable 300 sedan confirm its continued appeal." "It's worth noting that while no compact domestic models made the list, Ford's 2012 Focus was less than half a point behind the 300 SRT8," Brauer added. "With a growing emphasis on small cars and high fuel efficiency, it's likely we'll see a domestic economy car in next year's Top 10 Best American Cars list." Total Car Score allows car buyers and enthusiasts alike to compare vehicles quickly and easily across all automotive segments. The "Total Car Score" is one comprehensive number assigned to a vehicle that represents an overall industry assessment from major automotive authorities.
