Alternate Fuel vs Internal Combustion Engine
COMBUSTION ENGINE
ICE vehicles ignite and combust fuel within an internal combustion engine (ICE).
- Does not require electricity and runs on gasoline
- Fuel efficiency is measured in MPG
- Short refilling time (< 5 min.)
- Fuel tank takes up relatively little space
- Fuel weight is low
- Braking energy is not recovered
- Complex gear system
ALTERNATE FUEL
Electric vehicles (EVs) are powered by the electricity from a rechargeable battery instead.
- May use a gasoline engine (in the case of hybrid vehicles)
- Plug-in hybrid and battery electric models require electricity for charging
- Electric vehicle tax credits available
- Fuel efficiency is typically measured in MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent)
- Typically a lower cost per mile traveled
- No tailpipe emissions for battery electric vehicles, lower emissions on other alternatve fuel vs. conventional
- Charging time can range from 30 minutes to 8 hours
- Can recover braking energy and requires only one gear
- Generally quieter operation
