2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan

Three years is a long time to tease an entrance into the SUV market but that’s about how long Rolls-Royce has taken to make its move to introduce the Cullinan. Size may not be everything but it is difficult to talk about the Rolls-Royce Cullinan without noting just how large it is. Everything about the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is big. The automakers first SUV follows the Bentley Bentayga V8 and the Lamborghini Urus as latecomers to the luxury segment. Perhaps it just needed a little more time to grow up. The Cullinan is six feet tall, exceeding the height of the Bentayga by four inches. The Cullinan weighs in at a whopping 5,860 pounds. It sits upon substantial 22” wheels. Its name was even taken from the biggest diamond ever discovered. What’s perhaps most interesting about this Rolls-Royce, is that the iconic Rolls-Royce vertical, slatted grille works perfectly on this SUV. It is almost as if the vehicle grew into it. While its massive size may be the first thing one notices, it doesn’t take long to recognize that Rolls-Royce has taken its entrance into the SUV market very seriously. It may be time to go big and go home.

An Off-Road Rolls?

It may be hard to imagine climbing over rocks and boulders in this $325,000 vehicle but it is important to know you could. The Cullinan features the automaker’s first ever all-wheel drive and an all-wheel steering system. The aluminum frame and suspension has been beefed up using large capacity air struts and stronger drive and prop shafts. A simple touch of the start button automatically elevates the Cullinan to its off-road driving height. This is an SUV that can travel through water up to 21” deep.

Big Power

A vehicle this substantial deserves substantial power and the Cullinan delivers. It has a 6.75 liter, twin-turbo V12 Rolls-Royce engine. This massive power plant creates some 563 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. It may also be hard to imagine this SUV reaching a top speed of 155 mph but it is also nice to know it could.

Luxury, Technology, Safety and Convenience

The large stature of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan pays off in a roomy interior with ample seating room for five. Choose from two captains chairs in the rear or bench seating. If you are so inclined, there is a dual, rear-facing seating option that extends over the rear bumper with the tailgate open. It provides a unique seating area for tailgating or just enjoying a sunset. The list of technology in this Rolls is long and includes a high-resolution, heads-up display, night vision and an alert-assist that helps prevent drowsy driving. There are multiple crash-avoidance systems including a wildlife and pedestrian warning system and active cruise control. All around visibility is facilitated through a four-camera parking system. The Cullinan has a navigation and infotainment system and onboard Wi-Fi. Doors close from the exterior at the touch of the door handle. What drivers will really appreciate about the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is its exceptional “Phantom-like” ride. This is destined to be an extraordinarily comfortable SUV that is quiet and smooth. The new Rolls-Royce Cullinan is expected to start hitting the road, and off-road, in early 2019.
